Peter Murkett, woodworker, cabinet maker, artist extraordinaire lives and works in Montery.
His early work was inspired by the simple, vernacular furniture and interiors of eighteenth-and nineteenth-century America. He soon began to specialize in Shaker designs. He became a partner in the restoration of the Old Inn on the Green in New Marlborough where his fireplace surrounds, corner bar and wicket, Windsor side chairs, wall clock, and harvest table complement the historic setting. His work is also featured in the restored Stebbins and Thayer houses, as well as Gedney Manor, all part of the resort.
Over the years Peter has made hundreds of chairs in a variety of traditional styles. He built his house and studio in the woods of Monterey where, in the beginning, he lived and worked without electricity, practicing the green-wood joinery perfected by chairmakers over two hundred years ago. He taught chairmaking in his studio, and at Country Workshops in North Carolina.
Peter's work is for those who value the nature of the wood, the elements of joinery, and the freedom and directness of the classic made modern. His pieces, from the smallest candleholders to the largest tables are a work of beauty. If you're in the showroom you'll hear oohs and aahs from everyone there. Stop by and you'll see why.
We think Peter Murkett is one of the Best of the Berkshires.
