FRELINGHUYSEN MORRIS HOUSE & STUDIO

The Frelinghuysen Morris House and Studio, next door to Tanglewood in Lenox, is a Bauhaus-inspired structure, preserved just as it was in the early 1940'.  This very special little museum houses paintings by Picasso, Braque, Leger and Gris, as well as American Cubist art.

Suzy Frelinghuysen and George L. K. Morris were key members of the American Abstract Artists Group which championed Cubism long after it went out of vogue. They also collected European abstract art, often buying direct from the artists, many of whom they knew.

Frelinghuysen, who painted and also sang soprano for the New York City Opera, has works in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, among other places. Morris painted and wrote criticism, often for the Partisan Review.   His works can be found in Whitney Museum of American Art and the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, among others.

Although they lived mostly in New York and Paris, but spent summers in Lenox.  Morris co-designed the modernist house with the architect John Butler Swann.  as an integration of art and architecture.. He painted the frescoes, which incorporate industrial-glass materials, in the living room; she painted the ones in the dining room with musical motifs. Many of their paintings hang on the walls, along with major works. In the 46-acre woodlands surrounding the house is Gaston Lachaise's monumental sculpture ''The Mountain,'' a reclining woman that Morris commissioned from his friend.

The museum is open from late June through Labor Day:

A 10 minute woodland walk from the parking area takes you to the House & Studio. A golf cart shuttle is available for those needing assistance.
