DREAMAWAY LODGE

A Berkshire legend for more than 90 years, rumored to have been a brothel and speakeasy during the great depression, this two hundred year old farmhouse at the edge of October Mountain State Forest is famed for its larger than life founders, Mamma Maria Frasca and her three musical daughters.   The 1975 visit by Arlo Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Allen Ginsberg and the Rolling Thunder Review, enhanced an already unmatched reputation as one of Berkshire County's best loved and most closely held secrets.
It is now a restaurant, ,bar, and music venue owned by Daniel Osman .  The delicious food is served in a  big, beautiful dining room with mismatched vintage  plates, flowers, candles and colorful art on the walls. It's a great, fun place for a large group, but you can also enjoy an intimate, romantic dinner for two.   Reservations are a must.  The music room is  comfortable and relaxing, with plush couches, pillows and chairs.  There's live  music on the weekends, but anyone is welcome to go in and sit at the piano at any time.  The beautiful grounds with gorgeous gardens make it a stunning event space.  There‘s a wildflower meditation labyrinth, an outdoor stone fire pit, miles of trails and nearly 18,000 acres of October Mountain State Forest across the road.  It's fairly close to Jacob's Pillow.

We think Dreamaway Lodge is one of the Best of the Berkshires.
It's on Old County Road, but that means nothing,  It's really off the beaten path and you definitely  need directions.  Go to their web-site
or call 413-623-8725

This is our favorite Indian Restaurant, not only in the Berkshires, but anywhere.  It's located in the Black Swan Best Western Motel on Rt. 20 in Lee, but don't let that stop you from trying it out.   From the minute you walk in you know you're in a special place with special people.  The menu is filled with mouth watering dishes and there is a full bar.  The friendly staff will gladly assist you in your choices, plus bring a little something to start  "on the house".  There are many vegetarian selections as well as meat, chicken and seafood dishes. and, of course, traditional tandori  dishes plus delicious condiments to go with everything.   The restaurant overlooks Laurel lake so try for one of the window tables where you'll have a panoramic view of the lake and the mountains in the distance.

We're fortunate in that we have friends who have a cottage across the lake so in the summer we're able to go to the Bombay by boat.  When we get there our drinks are waiting for us.  After a delicious meal we get back in our kayaks in time to paddle home just as the sun sets.   But, however you get there and whenever you get there, you'll have a marvelous meal and it won't cost you a fortune.

We think Bombay Bar and Grill is one of the Best of the Berkshires.

BABA LOUIE'S is simply the best Pizza anywhere.  To start, it's made with Sourdough crust with organic ingredients from the  Berkshire Mountain bakery, then baked in a wood fired oven.  This is not your normal cheese pie.  Although they do make a simple Margarita, most of their toppings are more unusual.  We've never found our favorite, The Ricardo, anywhere else because no-one else offers their goat cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, asiago cheese, kalamata olives fresh mozzerella, fresh basil and parmasean cheese.  Who else makes a Dirty Brutto, roasted red potatoes, pesto, roasted garlic, parmesan cheese and fresh basil?  Then they add roasted garlic.  Everyone loves the BBQ chicken which also is different than anywhere else.  This one has chicken, red onions, fresh mozzarella, smoked gouda, fresh oregano and parmesan.  There are lots of other pizzas to choose from and you can add your own ingredients from a long list.  The salads are amazing.  Our favorite is the Allegra which is organic mixed greens, figs, apricots, roasted pecans and their own balsamic vinaigrette.  The small is enough for two, the family size is enough for at least 6.  Every night there is a special pasta and there's always the kid's pasta which is served with butter, olive oil or marinara sauce.  There are a couple of yummy Panini's too.  There's a nice wine and beer list and a good selection of Natural Sodas.

Baba Louie's is open for lunch and dinner, but closes between 3 and 5.  There's usually a line  at night so be prepared to wait.  The service is friendly and helpful in spite of the crowds.  There's also a take out window in the back.  You can call ahead and your food will be waiting for you.

We think Baba Louie's is one of the Best of the Berkshires.
