The Bookstore in Lenox, one of the rare independent bookstores left in the sea of big box and mail order bookstores is.a great place for browsing and buying books.  Its owner, Matt Tannenbaum,  who greets everyone with a smile and a joke, is very knowledgeable, as are the other employees.  They seem, somehow, to have read every book!  They stock the latest bestsellers, and also many wonderful obscure books in addition to a large selection of local authors and books having to do with the Berkshires. You will probably walk out with a book you've never heard of and will end up loving it.  They will also be happy to order anything they don't have in stock.

There are often book signings, author appearances and Poetry readings. You can find wonderful used books, a good selection of CD's and fun post-cards. It's a cozy, friendly place to just hang out and browse and as a bonus, there's the Shade Art gallery featuring works of artists with Berkshire connections.  Alice Brock, of Alice's Restaurant fame, shows her art there.

We think The Bookstore is one of the Best of the Berkshires.

Guido's Fresh Marketplace

There are grocery stores and there is Guido's. a unique country market with an innovative, cosmopolitan flair. The good part is they have high quality natural and gourmet foods.  The even better part is they try, as much as possible, to support small local companies and farms, of which there are many in the Berkshires.  This  enables Guido's to provide a delightfully eclectic sampling of regional foods. There are many healthy packaged foods without additives or preservatives, as well as lots of fresh ethnic foods.  The produce section is gorgeous, the meat, poultry and fish are fresh, not packaged.  There is a good selection of wines and a complete wellness center for natural products to take in or put on your body.  There's a small nursery with beautiful, fresh plants.  They offer a 10% Senior Citizen discount Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, encourage you to bring your own bags or pack your groceries in boxes in order to be environment  friendly.  Their staff is knowledgeable and friendly and will do all they can to help you find what you're looking for.

There are two locations,
South Street on the Lenox/Pittsfield Road  413-442-9912 x116
Main Street in Great Barrington. 413-528-9255 x37

We think Guido's is one of the Best of the Berkshires.
